The seventeen Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations are the blueprint that countries, citizens, and companies follow to achieve a sustainable and overall better future for all. They are interrelated, and they address the current global challenges, such as environmental degradation, climate change, inequality, and poverty, to which we want to put an end by 2030.
We designed our network of secure, automatic, and smart parking stations for bicycles, keeping in mind their positive impact on cities and the well-being of their citizens. Therefore, they aligned with several SDGs, reflecting the population’s efforts towards change.

SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy
The seventh Sustainable Development Goal intends to ensure the access to clean and affordable energy, which is key to the development of agriculture, businesses, communications, education, healthcare and transportation.
Access to energy is of great importance in our day-to-day lives, as it is present in transportation, our homes and at work, but a majority of it comes from non-renewable sources.
Most vehicles use fossil fuel, therefore to reach sustainable transportation we must promote electric options, or those which do not require fuel, such as bicycles. Increasing the use of bicycles instead of vehicular traffic, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by their fuel.
With our network of secure bicycle parking stations we promote bicycles as means of transport in cities and we contribute to the accomplishment of the following target:
- Increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure
In the ninth Sustainable Development Goal, the UN argues that economic growth, social development and climate action are heavily dependent on investments in infrastructure, sustainable industrial development and technological progress. Nonetheless, sustained growth implies an industrialization supported by innovation and resilient infrastructure.
The global manufacturing industry is one of the engines of economic growth. It has, however, been on a decline for some time now, which was aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic, affecting the global economy. The UN considers both the correction of this situation and the industry’s focus on sustainability an indispensable objective by 2030 and promotes investments in transport infrastructure and advanced technologies.
An inclusive, sustainable, and innovative industrialization fosters the environment needed for dynamic and competitive economic forces to thrive, generating employment and income and improving the quality of life of citizens.
upandbike’s bicycle parking infrastructure is sustainable, accessible, and secure for the population. The technology in our parking systems is innovative, and we are capable of transforming our sector in the industry.
By promoting bicycle use in cities through the installation of reliable infrastructure such as ours, we reduce carbon emissions, and we lead daily transport towards more sustainable means. Furthermore, we foster health and exercise among citizens, which elevates their quality of life and their well-being.
Thanks to these arguments, our network of secure and intelligent parking stations has the necessary characteristics to contribute to a variety of the targets belonging to this SDG:
- Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure to support economic development and human well-being.
- Upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes.
- Upgrade the technological capabilities of industrial sectors, encouraging innovation, and enhance scientific research.
SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
Due to a continued increase in the world’s population, of which more than a half resides in urban areas, the UN considers that the organization of cities must be oriented towards the well-being of its citizens, making them inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, and declares it its eleventh Sustainable Development Goal.
One of the main challenges that cities face is the contamination levels present. Cities occupy just 3% of the Earth’s surface, but account for 75% of carbon emissions. Even then, sustainable development cannot be achieved without significantly transforming the way urban spaces are built and managed.
Starting with a change in the way citizens move around the city, a reduction in the number of vehicles in circulation would imply a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions.
Moreover, anyone can use a bicycle since the appearance of electric bicycles, no matter their physical condition. On the other hand, electric scooters or second-hand bicycles are more accessible means of transport than a motor vehicle.
upandbike provides save spaces to cities, in which their inhabitants are able to park their bicycles easily, ensuring that their investment is protected. This way we boost sustainable mobility and the cycling network, helping to achieve the following targets:
- Enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management.
- Reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, by paying special attention to air quality and municipal waste management.
Other SDGs from upandbike's point of view
In upandbike we also identify ourselves with the third Sustainable Development Goal, that ensures healthy lives and promotes well-being for all. With our bicycle parking stations situated stategically around the city, be it near the city center, workplaces or residential areas, we manage to increase bicycle mobility, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
On the other hand, the thirteenth Sustainable Development Goal directly correlates to the results of establishing a cycling network in cities, as it wants to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
By reducing the number of vehicles we manage to stop carbon emissions and we improve the air quality in cities, where 75% of carbon emissions are generated.
Indirectly, we help achieve other Sustainable Development Goals, such as the twelfth, fouteenth and fifteenth SDGs, related to food consumption and production and to life below water and on land.
